Say Hello to CYOA member VIXEN.Built-in 1937 this 33' wooden sloop is owned by Andrew Norris was restored by Brooklin Boat Yard in 2012.

V***n was designed by Knud Reimers and built at the Kungsors boatyard in central Sweden by Oscar Schelin. Imported to the UK before the Second World War, she was one of only a handful of the elegant Square Meter Rule yachts. At the time building to the rule was prolific in the Baltic but scarcely known in the UK. As co-skipper Jack Gifford explains, “Much finer in form and lighter in displacement than her British counterparts, V***n and her kind were viewed with suspicion by the (British) yachting establishment and with her light and efficient construction deemed as ‘un-seaworthy.”

On this dark and rainy day it's fun to remember that only a couple months ago the student-built Rozinante launched (design by L. Francis Herreshoff.) Since then Alum Trevor Warren (bow) started his own business working on boats and alum Ned Flash (stern) became a rigger at CSR Marine. Instructor Leland Gibson (seated) just started up teaching a new cohort of boatbuilding students.

Finally starting to use the drone to capture the places we visit from up above! This little anchorage has a tricky entrance but we made it past the shoaling and found ourselves a beautiful backyard for the night. Flying the drone definitely gets my blood pumping! This is Bear Creek just off the ICW in North Carolina ⛵️

The Doldrums?

There is plastic in the oceans, mostly discarded fishing gear, but there is no island of plastic waste twice the size of Texas in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

This is IOLANTHE,a CYOA member, she is the sixth and newest yacht in the Herreshoff Newport 29 class, built in 2008. NG Herreshoff built the first N-29s in 1914. Four were built to the original design, although, one boat, Comet, was lost in the 1938 Hurricane. The fifth boat in the class, Rogue, was built in 1953 by Seth Persson. Halsey Herreshoff designed a new rig, deck and cabin layout for IOLANTHE. Her interior was built in a traditional Herreshoff manner with painted raised paneling and mahogany trim.
She is owned by Bob and Bill Yaro, and is home ported in Stamford, CT.

Veterans Day honors all of those who have served the country, whether in times of war or peace, and is intended to thank living veterans for their service.

This silhouette is part of a series made in New York City by Conza Howell during World War II between 1943 and 1945. Conza was invited by the Program Director of the United Seamen’s Service (USS), to provide “entertainment of a quiet nature” for servicemen during their New York port stays—often before they departed for the Western Front. One night a week she would make silhouettes at The Wilshire Hotel, located at 134 West 58th Street, so that the sitters could send them home to their loved ones.

This silhouette depicts George Decker (1913-2006) the same year he would serve with distinction at the Invasion of Normandy Beach with the 101st New York National Guard Anti-Tank Battalion. For his service at Normandy, as well as at Utah Beach and the capture of Cherbourg, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal.
