Salvaged Southwest Desert Home

Honoring the land. Reimagining the future.

Scheduled to begin construction next month, home is more than a residence, it’s a design manifesto for what sustainability can look like in the Sonoran Desert. Developed for an artist and her mother, the project deconstructs a structurally compromised 5,000-sf home, salvaging everything from TJIs and concrete tiles to lumber charred for new siding. The new home rises on the original foundations, reducing carbon impact, limiting site disturbance, and celebrating material reuse with artistry and restraint.

Featuring 100% off-grid capability, passive cooling design, and a high-performance building envelope, this home reframes waste as opportunity and design as environmental stewardship. Even the landscape is reborn, as the casita incorporates the remains of the previous home’s stem walls to create a garden, which is named the “Ghost Garden.”

Our firm recently completed construction on this dynamic exhibition space, designed to beautifully integrate with nature’s artistry.

Now open, Orchid Fever celebrates the beauty and diversity of orchids in the Sonoran Desert, blending vibrant floral displays with educational insights. The exhibit runs from March 1 – April 28, 2025, so don’t miss the chance to experience this immersive floral sanctuary!

Sunset and Sips at Taliesin West

Last night the Foundation hosted the AIA Phoenix Metro Board and the AIA staff at Taliesin West for Sunset and Sips. In addition to cocktails and sunset views on the guest deck, we had a private tour exploring Wrights living quarters, bedroom and garden, Eve’s cottage and other areas that are generally not open to the public. In the Sun Cottage, Johnson Jeyakumar, the AIA Associate Director, was kind enough to provide a private concert for the group.

Revitalizing Downtown Mesa: Three Unique Facades in the Works

We’re honored to have been selected by the City of Mesa to contribute to the Downtown District Revitalization - Facade Improvements project. As part of this initiative, our firm is designing three distinct restaurant facades, each tailored to enhance the public realm and reflect the unique character of the businesses.

These designs focus on aesthetic enhancements, storefront improvements, and integrated shading elements—all aimed at fostering a more pedestrian-friendly and vibrant downtown.

Espiritu – A contemporary space with a bold, inviting neon-lit atmosphere.

House of Holmes – A sophisticated entry with a warm glow and a minimalist steel canopy.

Phoenix Motor Leathers + K’é – A sleek commercial facade that highlights local businesses with clean, modern design.

The works of — pieces that seem less like objects and more like questions— will be on display at the offices of 180 Degrees Design + Build, where they’ll inhabit the space with a kind of quiet, buzzing presence, simultaneously asking to be purchased and interrogated.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Arizona Architecture Foundation (), a cause that seems less about architecture as structure and more about architecture as possibility.

Expect an evening of drinks (the social lubricant of choice), music (background or foreground depending on your mood), and the chance to experience art not as a thing to be looked at but as a thing that looks back.

Nestled in Paradise Valley, this 1,000 SF casita is undergoing a transformation into a private music studio—a space for creativity, jamming, and recording. Designed for a musician who thrives on blues and classic rock, the studio blends raw materiality with refined acoustics, creating an atmosphere as rich and textured as the music it will produce. Steel, glass, and exposed masonry ground the structure in its desert setting while offering a modern edge, perfect for late-night jam sessions under the stars.

This 750-square-foot spa and exercise space, part of a residence in Phoenix, Arizona, is designed for relaxation and movement while maintaining a visual connection to the Piestewa Peak landscape. It features an indoor sauna, cold plunge, and a dedicated workout and lounge area. Natural materials, filtered daylight, and a rhythmic façade enhance the experience, offering a serene and functional environment within the home.
