🌬️ With cold weather setting in, plumbing problems can sneak up on us! Here’s how to protect your home and pipes:
🔧 Know your main water shutoff. If a pipe bursts, you’ll need to act fast.
🚿 Disconnect hose pipes from all outdoor faucets.
🌡️ Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to let warm air circulate. Your kitchen faucet, especially if it’s on an exterior wall, is a great one to leave trickling during extremely cold weather.
💧 Keep one or two faucets trickling. Water movement helps prevent freezing, especially for pipes near outside walls.
🚪 Close garage doors to protect any water supply lines running through the space.
🛠️ Cover crawlspace vents in winter to hold warmth in the crawlspace.
🔥 If your water heater is outside (like in a garage or utility closet), leave a faucet running warm water, a little less than the diameter of a pencil.
🏊 Drain outdoor plumbing lines feeding pools, irrigation systems, and hot tubs.
If you lose power and need to leave your home:
• Turn off your main water supply.
• Open all faucets and hose bibbs to drain the system completely.
• Drain your water heater as much as possible using the drain valve.
🚨 Do not leave your home without draining the water system.

• Turn off the water.

With the impending weather, plumbing problems can be common. Here are some things to keep in mind.
- Know where & how to shut the water off if needed.
- Be sure to disconnect all hose pipes from the outside faucets.
- If your kitchen sink is on an outside wall, leave cabinet doors open to allow warm air into the cabinet. Your kitchen faucet is usually a good faucet to leave on during extremely cold weather.
- Often times, the pipes that freeze are located near an outside wall. Keep one or two faucets trickling slowly at all times. Water moving through the system should prevent the line from freezing.
- Your crawlspace vents are fine to cover in winter to keep the crawlspace warmer. This will help to keep the warmth contained.
- If you have an exterior water heating source, leave hot water running at the kitchen faucet. A little smaller than the diameter of a pencil will do.
- Drain outdoor plumbing lines feeding pools, irrigation systems and or hot tubs.
- If your pipes do freeze, turn your water off and drain off remaining water.
- If a pipe bursts, turn the water off and call a licensed plumber—Us.
