This week in the final installment of our Black History Month series honoring influential figures in the construction industry we're featuring the architect Verner Woodson Tandy.

Vertner Woodson Tandy made history as New York’s first licensed Black architect and co-founder of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This week in our Black History Month series honoring influential figures in the construction industry we're featuring pioneering architect Hilyard Robinson.

As the first Black graduate of Columbia University’s architecture program, Robinson left a lasting impact on public housing with projects like Langston Terrace Dwellings in Washington, D.C., the first federally funded public housing project designed by a Black architect.

His work extended to creating affordable housing for marginalized communities, including the Aberdeen Gardens in Virginia, and as a professor at Howard University, Robinson inspired countless future architects. His legacy continues to influence architecture and social change.

Up next in our Black History Month series honoring influential figures in the construction industry is the trailblazing architect Norma Merrick Sklarek.

Norma Merrick Sklarek was a true pioneer in architecture. Known as the “Rosa Parks of Architecture,” she broke barriers as the first African American woman licensed as an architect in New York and California and the first to become a Fellow of the AIA.

Sklarek co-founded the first woman-owned architectural firm in 1985 and led iconic projects like the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. Her trailblazing legacy continues to inspire future generations.

This Black History Month we will be reflecting on notable figures that shaped the construction industry. First up is the United States's first accredited African American architect, Robert Robinson Taylor.

As the first Black graduate of MIT, Robert Robinson Taylor paved the way for countless others. His architectural brilliance shaped Tuskegee Institute, where he designed many iconic buildings that still stand to this day.

His impact was recognized in 2015 when the U.S. Postal Service issued a Black Heritage stamp in his honor. As the great-grandfather of Valerie Jarrett, a senior advisor to President Barack Obama, Taylor’s legacy of breaking barriers and striving for excellence continues to inspire.

This Black History Month, we celebrate his enduring legacy of excellence and innovation.
