Kemp Care Network Announces Keaton's House - Paul Paletta Children's Hospice

The hospice will provide compassionate, dignified, and specialized end-of-life care for children and youth with life-limiting illnesses. The Ontario Government's investment of up to $2.5 million emphasizes the critical need for such a facility, ensuring that families can access comprehensive palliative care close to home.

Keaton’s House will offer comfortable and family-inclusive accommodations with 10 dedicated bedrooms, along with bright and accessible indoor and outdoor play areas. It will feature day wellness programs and therapies, including massage, movement, recreation, and music. The hospice will provide pediatric end-of-life nursing and personal support, respite care, and symptom management, as well as at-home hospice services. Private spaces for families and extensive grief and bereavement support will be available to parents, caregivers, siblings, and grandparents.

Designed by mcCallumSather, this project, in partnership with McMaster Children's Hospital , will enhance palliative care services in the Hamilton/Niagara/Haldimand/Brant area, with the hospice set to open in 2026. Kemp Care is committed to supporting families through this essential care, providing a haven of comfort and support during their most challenging times.

The Ballroom Bowl Yorkville project captivated mcCallumSather as soon as they met its visionary owner and project team. The idea of working on such a highly creative entertainment venue inspired the Interiors team to take on this project which is outside of the firm’s regular portfolio of work.

The team was up for the challenge and celebrated the interior design opportunities in all aspects of the project including millwork and custom furnishings, signage, wall graphics and wayfinding. Working collaboratively with the Ballroom team to bring a fresh new design aesthetic to this location was inspiring. The results speak to the creative enthusiasm of all involved.

In 2010, mcCallumSather undertook the expansion of Burlington, Ontario's bus transit maintenance facility to meet the growing needs of Burlington Transit. This comprehensive project involved a feasibility study, building audit, life-cycle cost analysis, and the subsequent design and renovation of the existing facility.

The original building, totaling 40,200 SF, fell short of accommodating the current and future needs of the City. mcCallumSather designed a meticulous renovation, incorporating a two-storey addition spanning 27,100 SF. The facility was divided into two main areas: the administration space and the bus maintenance and storage area. A careful consideration of spatial constraints led to the development of phasing strategies spanning ten years.

The project was divided into three major phases to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing operations while optimizing the use of available space. This approach allowed for efficient growth and adaptation of the facility over time, aligning with the City's projected expansion.

mcCallumSather prioritized sustainable design enhancements, creating a healthier work environment, boosting energy efficiency, and minimizing the facility's overall environmental impact. The design integrates eco-friendly transit options, aligning with modern sustainability standards. The facility's layout and infrastructure support green initiatives, setting a benchmark for environmentally conscious transit operations.

LIBERIAN LEARNING CENTRE IN THE NEWS

CBC Hamilton covered the incredible story of Leo Lekpele Nupolu Johnson and his decade-long journey to bring the Liberian Learning Centre to life.

The design process for the Liberian Learning Centre was a comprehensive and thoughtful exploration. Collaboration with construction partners, local architects, and engineers was a key aspect.

The design’s response to cultural and contextual surroundings aimed to be progressive, inspiring community development beyond its functional role. Emphasis was placed on prioritizing locally sourced labor, craftspeople, and materials, exemplified by the use of compressed earth blocks.

“According to Willems Ransom, the project architect, the bricks are one aspect of how the learning centre is built to be environmentally friendly and resilient. Thick masonry walls will help shade and cool the building, and natural ventilation will limit the need for fans or air conditioning.”

Sustainability was the driving force throughout the design process, with the building intentionally sculpted by natural elements. The design also considered future adaptability, with spaces designed to be flexible and accommodating to evolving community needs and emerging technologies, showcasing a commitment to enduring community connection and empowerment.

Willems Ransom will be representing mcCallumSather at the Liberian Learning Centre dedication in Paynesville, Liberia on February 23, 2024.

The meticulous work of mcCallumSather’s mechanical engineering team is at the core of many of the firm’s successful projects.

The Valley Park Community Centre addition and renovation posed an exhilarating challenge, and the team embraced it with passion and expertise. The firm’s mechanical engineers delved into the intricacies of air flow, acoustics, and comfort, seamlessly blending these elements with the library's new identity.

The project wasn't just about innovation; it was about responsibility. Achieving LEED Gold, the team orchestrated a symphony of systems to reduce the building's carbon footprint by an impressive 50%. Reusing and reinventing existing systems while introducing new, energy-efficient technologies showcased our commitment to sustainability.

The mechanical engineering team is ready to extend their expertise to shape the future of projects on the horizon. With a commitment to innovation and sustainability, they are set to apply their proven solutions to upcoming endeavors, ensuring that each project benefits from the same level of mechanical brilliance that defines the team.

Beyond conventional educational spaces, the Liberian Learning Centre integrates Liberia's first postwar comprehensive learning center, library, co-working spaces, business incubation areas, sports facilities, and event spaces. The center is strategically located adjacent to Paynesville City Hall in an active plaza, and its development is planned in three phases, ensuring adaptive growth and functional operations at each stage.

Sustainable design, community engagement, and adaptive growth define Phase 1, featuring a sculpted building harnessing natural elements and a flexible interior for diverse programs.

Spread across 10,000 SF of space in the historic Westinghouse HQ , mcCallumSather designed its own workplace as a reflection of their entrepreneurial spirit, combining sustainability and heritage design within a formerly neglected but iconic Hamilton building.

The design is organized in zones, paying tribute to the firm’s integrated nature, without a distinction between the mechanical, interior design or architectural teams. As a result, the space becomes more project focused, delivering increased efficiency and client centric service.

In 2022, the mcCallumSather office earned its LEED Gold certification for the interiors. The workplace is an incubator for the firm's shared beliefs in sustainable practices and innovative design, cultivating a collaborative environment for these principles to thrive.

In 2024, mcCallumSather's growing team aims to lead groundbreaking sustainable initiatives, pushing the boundaries of innovative design to create transformative, environmentally conscious design solutions that set new industry standards. The firm's commitment extends to prioritizing client's visions, and building new relationships and partnerships built on trust, innovation and exceptional service.

On January 1, Edge Architects began operating under the name of mCallumSather and with that, came their extensive portfolio of modular, affordable housing designs.

The Uquutaq Butler Building and 158 Developments are two affordable housing projects in Iqaluit, Nunavut designed for local housing provider Uquutaq Society. Uquutaq Society's mission is to provide culturally sensitive, safe, healthy and dignified housing solutions and supports for homeless people in Iqaluit.

Elements of the new building designs draw inspiration from a minimalist modern design look and will be structured on an elevated pre-engineered metal system building. The developments are designed to feature multiple barrier free accessibility units and will aim for a high energy efficiency design.
